Post Divorce Issues
Despite best intentions, unforeseen circumstances; lay- off, termination of employment or disability may arise which make complying with agreements and Court Orders difficult, and often impossible. Given the current economic climate, corporate downsizing, massive lay-offs' and the like, these situations are becoming increasingly prevalent.
If you are faced with a situation which adversely affects your ability to afford payment of child support or alimony, it is imperative to seek legal advice immediately. Stopping payments without first obtaining the proper Court Orders may result in an action for contempt against you. In the State of Connecticut the penalties for contempt based on failure to pay child support and or alimony may be severe and include incarceration.
In the event your former spouse sustains a major change in circumstances, such as job loss or disability, seek legal advice as soon as you become aware of the change of circumstances.
At the Law office of Laurie Giles, we work with both payee and payor parties to help resolve these issues. It is our firm goal to facilitate amicable resolutions.
